Obsession (2026)
There were so many things that I liked about this movie and three things that frustrated me. Of those three things I will only address two of them because the third is a spoiler.
I think this is a great commentary on young men in their 20s and all the wrong ways that they can deal with unrequited love. This movie is going to be the subject matter of countless video essays on YouTube for the next five to ten years. It addresses a lot without feeling too "this is the message".
I am not familiar with the two leads, Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, but I thought they were great. I look forward to seeing them in whatever their next projects are. Whoever did the lighting in this movie, they did amazing work. They really set the tone for how crazy this movie was going to get.
This movie has pacing problems. The main character often finds himself in awkward moments. The film really want you to feel the awkwardness of those moments. The problem is it stays in those moments too long and it just slows the film down. What is supposed to feel like a stylistic choice ends up feeling like padding.
My other issue with this movie it feels like it was a short film/ story idea that was stretched out to fit the length of a feature film. The second act of this movie plays some of the same notes over and over again when it should just move on to the next one. The two leads make it easy to get through these moments, but that's a testament to their acting abilities rather than the script.
All my issues with the pacing of this film come during the second act. Especially compared to the fast paced and chaotic nature of the third act.
Do I recommend this movie, yes. Do you need to see this in a theater, maybe. If you like horror movies then yes. If you’re a casual horror movie fan like I am then I recommend waiting until it hits streaming services. I think this movie is going to play better on rewatches, there is a lot this movie is trying to say and I think it takes more than one watch to get it all. Also I would pair it with 2025's
Companion for a "the dangers of unrequited love" double feature.
My review is a strong B-.
